Gifted Researcher Roundtable

December 2, 2017 @ 9:00 am - 12:00 pm

Join us for roundtable discussions with two of the nation’s leading researchers, educators and authors in the field of gifted education.

Ann Lupkowski Shoplik, Ph.D., co-editor of A Nation Empowered, and Administrator at the Belin-Blank Center for Gifted Education and Talent Development at The University of Iowa.

9:00 a.m. Do you know that there are 20 different types of academic acceleration? The purpose of A Nation Empowered, co-edited by Dr. Shoplik, is to inform educators, parents, and policy makers of current research on acceleration, and how that information has been applied to educational policy and practice throughout the nation. Dr. Shoplik will discuss and answer questions on the various types of acceleration, so that both parents and educators can make informed decisions.

Karen B. Rogers, Ph.D. is Professor Emerita of Gifted Studies in the Special Education & Gifted Education Department at the College of Education, Leadership, and Counseling at the University of St. Thomas in Minneapolis, where she has taught and conducted research since 1984. She is author or co-author of five books (with another four in the works), many journal articles, multiple publications, and book chapters. Her research interests include twice-exceptionality; research synthesis techniques; cognitive development; gifted program design, development, and evaluation; student assessment; and arts education.

10:30 a.m. Eminence or Talent Actualization: What Can Parents Do To Make This Happen? Karen will share the stories of the childhoods of several persons who were/are considered eminent (that is, have had several biographies written about their accomplishments in a variety of fields). The audience will be asked to participate in what they would have done to help these “children” become what they did as well as what they wouldn’t have done. Through this discussion, it is hoped that participants will be able to make a “game plan” for what they wish to see for their own children and how they will go about it.
